The Hutten Collection

The “Hutten Collection” at the HLB Fulda is Germany’s most comprehensive library collection of works by and about Ulrich von Hutten.
The imperial knight, Ulrich von Hutten, a famous German humanist and publicist, was born in Burg Steckelberg near Schlüchtern (near Fulda) and educated at the monastic school in Fulda until 1505. It is for this reason that the former Hessen State Library in Fulda could compile a special collection of works by and about Ulrich von Hutten.

History and Development of the Hutten Collection:
The first pieces of this “Hutten Collection” derive from a private collection received in 1959 and containing lots of first prints from the 16th century. This so-called “Steinfeldish Collection” contained 88 prints from Hutten, the “Epistolae obscurorum virorum” (“dark men’s letters”/ "Obscurantists' letters") dating to the 16th century, 30 portraits from the 16th to 19th centuries and around 200 editions of Hutten literature.
In 1988, the Fulda Hutten Collection formed the key attraction at the much visited and internationally successful exhibition in Schlüchtern to honour the 500th anniversary of the birthday of the humanists. The exhibition catalogue for this anniversary event describes over 30 contributions from the previous Hutten research.
At the same time, the director of the library, Dr. Artur Brall, compiled an index to the “Huttenica” at the county library in Fulda.

This presented the collection as it stood prior to the index’s publication (1988). But nine groups of indexes of Hutten’s works in editions from the 16th century up to the present day, as well as manuscripts of letters, documents and files, and a comprehensive collection of pictures of Hutten and his contemporaries, were not included in the compilation.

Over the years the collection has been expanded: the last time this occurred was in 2002 when 32 Hutten prints from the 16th century were acquired from a private honorary library.

The acquisition (from: FZ, 26.7.2002) of these new Hutten prints represented a great gain for the Hutten research, for research into the history of humanism and the Reformation and for book history in Germany.
Today the University and State Library in Fulda owns the third largest collection in the whole world, in terms of originals from the era of printing in the 16th century.
Only the University of Strasbourg, whose collection includes the Hutten library belonging to the lawyer and philologist Eduard Bücking (1802-1870), the editor of several scientific texts about Hutten and the British Museum’s library own more Huttenica than the HLB Fulda.
In 2005, the Hutten collection comprised 641 titles, not including the Hutten manuscripts.

The Collection’s Contents:
The HLB Fulda’s collection is being continually expanded using financial means.
It focuses on Hutten’s writings, the presentation of his life and work, as well as the records and presentations of his legacy. The historical environment is only considered when it has direct relevance to Hutten.

Usage:
The Hutten collection is located in the Heinrich von Bibra Platz library.
The collection has been specially catalogued and set up.
It is not possible to borrow items from the collection, but they can be ordered and used in the reading room.
The complete collection is now also listed in the online catalogue.
