General Information
Every computer science student should learn to use both, a PC (Microsoft Windows) and a UNIX computer. This knowledge is necessary, because the user interfaces and the usage of the computers vary considerably. The Software Laboratory III is fitted with 32 ‘Sun Ray Clients’ which have access to different servers.
Two ‘Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000` servers form the main basis, which are each equipped with two Quad-Core processors and 32GB RAM. In the lab are several servers available with the operating systems ‘Solaris’ , ‘Solaris x86’ and ‘Linux’, which can be used during classes. The servers run on ‘Solaris’ and `Linux`, because these operating systems are widely used in industry and therefore the students are prepared directly for their future careers. All computers are connected with gigabit Ethernet and have 150MB/s WiN connections to the internet.
One of the laboratory’s computers is linked to two high quality projectors (beamer). These projectors are being used in various classes, as it can be used to present programmes, configuration scripts, errors, graphics, etc. and therefore increases the teaching quality.
The computers in the Software Laboratory III, the CAE Laboratory and the WI Laboratory use the same user management and the same servers, meaning that the computers in these laboratories can be used in individual cases to work together on the same task (parallel processing in heterogeneous environment).
Aims
Software Laboratory III is used to allow the transfer of knowledge and experience that the industry expects from computer scientists and form the basis for practice-based education in the faculty of Computer Science at the University of Applied Sciences, Fulda. It is mainly used for classes in the areas of Operating Systems (UNIX), Graphical Data Processing, Simulation, Databasesystems, Parallel Programming and Projects.
When the laboratories are not being used for classes, they are available for students to use in preparation for exams, to work on their projects and presentations, and for internet research.
